An Honorary Man

AD 415 - Egypt ruled by Christian Rome - zealot monks declare holy war on Jews, Pagans and Scientists.
At the political centre of this horror stands a scientist and teacher who risks death to defy the sectarian laws of the Bishops - she is Hypatia, one of the last great teachers to stand against forces that were to halt scientific and social development for a thousand years.
Hypatia, the first recorded woman scientist and philosopher.

This play is set in her private rooms on the night before her murder. Having sensed the approach of death she is tormented by nightmares and fights to stay awake writing letters to her students, colleagues and her lover.

Turning The Handle
England, the 1900’s. The birth of the film industry saw many dreams realised, but many more shattered.
Hidden behind the scenes were stories of courage and despair. There are many forms of courage, it could be as simple as ‘buckling down’ and getting on with the job in hand, supporting ones husband in times of crisis, bringing up a child in times of distress and hardship or just cheerfully discarding one’s clothes.

A funny, poignant story about the beginning of the cinema - told by a lady of a certain age as she dresses for her work - and looks back on her life as one of the unsung pioneers of the naughty film.

Little Girls Like to Kiss
New York 1948. The light from the dirty window throws the distorted pattern of the blind onto the unkempt office of a private eye. It could be a morning like any other, as secretary Marcia Blouse unlocks the doors at ten-0’something or other.
The dusty heat of another jazz-infested day drifts from the mean streets outside. Marcia wipes the bloodstains from the telephone hand-set, shedding a little tear for a filing cabinet full of wasted lives and messy secrets as she pours herself one last glass of memories and shares with us the story of one last case...

A film-noir style thriller with a plot that twists its way through atomic secrets, special agents, forbidden love, paranoia and murder.

Backstage Whispers
The Edinburgh Festival.
She auditioned for a nice little part as the girl next door in a musical love story - so how did she end up clad in leather and crawling around backstage making rude noises-off as the sado-masochist tart, destined to end up as the horribly mutilated body in a massacre in a northern chip shop?

Part-farce, part-tragedy, the story of an actress with a dream of appearing in Edinburgh - who got trapped by the theatre company that wouldn’t be allowed to busk in Hell. A story of envy, backbiting, intrigue, and worst of all, conflicting rehearsal philosophies.
